Anexos ❚ 89 Page 47 of 64 Paediatric Cardiology curriculum Trainees may train in academic medicine as an academic clinical fellow (ACF), academic clinical lecturer (ACL) or equivalent. Some trainees may opt to do research leading to a higher degree without being appointed to a formal academic programme. This new curriculum should not impact in any way on the facility to take time out of programme for research (OOPR) but as now, such time requires discussion between the trainee, the TPD and the Deanery as to what is appropriate together with guidance from the appropriate SAC that the proposed period and scope of study is sensible. 4.4 Taking time out of programme There are a number of circumstances when a trainee may seek to spend some time out of specialty training, such as undertaking a period of research or taking up a fellowship post. All such requests must be agreed by the postgraduate dean in advance and trainees are advised to discuss their proposals as early as possible. Full guidance on taking time out of programme can be found in the Gold Guide. 4.5 Acting up as a consultant A trainee coming towards the end of their training may spend up to three months “acting- up” as a consultant, provided that a consultant supervisor is identified for the post and satisfactory progress is made. As long as the trainee remains within an approved training programme, the GMC does not need to approve this period of “acting up” and their original CCT date will not be affected. More information on acting up as a consultant can be found in the Gold Guide. 5 Programme of Assessment 5.1 Purpose of assessment The purpose of the programme of assessment is to: • assess trainees’ actual performance in the workplace • enhance learning by providing formative assessment, enabling trainees to receive immediate feedback, understand their own performance and identify areas for development • drive learning and enhance the training process by making it clear what is required of trainees and motivating them to ensure they receive suitable training and experience • demonstrate trainees have acquired the GPCs and meet the requirements of GMP • ensure that trainees possess the essential underlying knowledge required for their specialty • provide robust, summative evidence that trainees are meeting the curriculum standards during the training programme;
