María Pallares
is Programme Coordinator
at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Madrid.
Previously, she has worked as research fellow for
Notre Europe (Paris), the Rafael Campalans
Foundation (Barcelona) and as free-lance con
sultant. She holds a Master in European Affairs
from Sciences Po., Paris.
Nicolás Sartorius.
A lawyer and journalist
by profession, Sartorius is executive vice-presi-
dent of the Fundación Alternativas. Imprisoned
for several years during the Franco dictatorship
for his trade union activities, he was co-founder
of Comisiones Obreras and member of the
Spanish Parliament for the Spanish Communist
Party and Izquierda Unida for several terms up
until 1993. He participated in social and political
negotiations during the Spanish Transition.
Since that time, he has devoted the greater part
of his time to writing. He is a frequent contribu-
tor to newspapers such as
El País
and is the au-
thor of numerous essays including
